biggest ocean animals

Squid are considered to be one of the biggest ocean animals, however only a few people know that they can attack you if you’re not careful. If you have never seen a squid personally then you should give yourself a pat on the back because chances are that you will. Although most people have pictures of huge squid floating around on the television or viewing from the movies, it is rare to see the real life size animals. Let’s start with a little background information about the squid and then we will tell you the biggest squid.

Biggest Ocean Animals

Ocean Animals

The first fact about these biggest ocean animals is that they are very good divers. Most people have seen the enormous creatures eating other animals when they are caught, but it is amazing how much they can actually dive into the water. There are three types of squid that can dive, there are the blue ringed cephalopod, the leatherback, and the janitor squid. These species of squid are very different in the way they swim. Each has a dorsal fin that acts as their legs while they can also use their arms to propel themselves.

Whale Shark

Ocean Animals

The second biggest ocean animal is the whale shark. One of the most incredible things about whales is that they can stay submerged for up to a hundred and twenty minutes without surfacing. Their eyesight is so acute that they can see anything at a distance of thirty feet. If you are wondering what makes a whale shark so amazing then just think about all of the oxygen they need to live each day. They also have a powerful sense of taste due to the gill covers that are located on each side of their head.

Blue Whale

Last but certainly not least is the blue whale. This massive creature can grow to be over one hundred and forty feet in length and weighs up to two hundred and sixty tons. This makes the blue whale one of the biggest ocean animals and it is also one of the most dangerous. Not only does the blue whale have one of the most powerful swim speeds, but they can also outrun most sharks.

All of these incredible animals are found along the coastlines of tropical areas around the world. There is no doubt that if you have a dream that you want to snorkel or scuba dive, then there is a very good chance that you will come across one or more of these incredible creatures. They are everywhere and some are so close to the water that you can actually see them from the shore.

Manta Ray

The third largest ocean dweller is the manta ray. This is a species that lives in the Southern Pacific Ocean off the coast of Chile. These incredible rays can reach lengths of over nine feet and can weigh anywhere between a hundred and eight hundred pounds. If you like a giant fish that is as beautiful as a butterfly or as strong as a football then a manta ray is definitely for you.

Other than these three there are many other amazing animals that can be found on Earth. For example, I have personally seen great white sharks swimming in the Pacific Ocean. I also know that these sharks can be seen off the shores of South America and even in Australia. I have personally never seen a greenback whale in the wild but I have personally been close to one and it was amazing!

Final Thoughts

One of the most popular animals to watch in the ocean is the sperm whales. Sperm whales are the largest animals that are able to travel by swimming. In order to be able to survive for so long the sperm whales need to travel long distances. There is a lot of speculation as to what the lifespan of sperm whales are but the best guess is that they live somewhere between twenty and thirty years.
