An Overview

All animals have a diet, but most people focus only on what they eat. In nature, animals eat both plant and animal matter. With a few exceptions, animals eat organic matter, breathe oxygen, can move, reproduce, and store food. But not all animals have a very similar diet.

Most mammals depend on plants for survival. In fact, plants are the single most significant food source for almost all mammals. Virtually all mammals feed on vegetation. Plants provide carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, and mineral salts which help to build and maintain a variety of tissues throughout the animal body. Among all animals, four out of five mammals feed on vegetation.

All vertebrates (alligators, snakes, turtles, salamanders, and birds) eat primarily meat. However, a small percentage of animals are semi-ambient carnivores that feed on small animals, including fish and insects. They have evolved over millions of years from more arboreal animals that used the trees and vegetation around them for food.

Insects are another important food source for mammals. They can obtain protein, carbohydrates, and minerals from plant materials. They are also an important source of food for birds and some reptiles such as lizards. Many insects are small and delicate. And, many animals prey on insects for protein and nutrients.

Some animals are nocturnal or diurnal in nature, meaning they are active during the day and inactive at night. Examples include bears, rabbits, squirrels, chinchillas, and bats. While most animals are nocturnal, insects are mostly diurnal.

In order to catch food, animals must run and hide. Running does not provide oxygen to the animal; therefore it is called a rather inefficient means of feeding. The hideout is a special chamber in the animal’s body that provides the animals with a warm, safe place to sleep and hide from predators. During the daytime, the animal uses its tongue to suck insect juices from plants or leaves. When night falls, the animal returns to its hideout to feed on the food stored there throughout the day.

Dense Bushes

Most animals make their homes in burrows or under dense bushes. They do this to avoid being seen by potential predators. To mark their territories, they chew bones and drop scent glands, which attracts insects and other creatures to their area. In addition, some animals create alarm pheromones that warn others of danger or other types of food. Other animals use mating glands to attract partners. All these behaviors are clearly evident in the animal kingdom and are fascinating to study.

Some animals are herbivores; others are carnivores. Herbivores eat plants and flowers, as well as any living thing that contain enough protein to sustain their body. Carnivores eat meat, although they can also consume fruit. Herbivores and carnivores all have hair. Fur is an indicator of the diet and lifestyle of an animal.

The Benefits

Insects serve as an important part of the lives of all animals. It serves as a source of food, shelter, and medicine. They are an important part of the ecosystem because they are the carriers of many life forms. They live all over the world in varying habitats, and they can be found in every continent. Some insects are pests, while others are beneficial to the environment. Examples of helpful insects include mosquitoes, dragonflies, bees, and wasps.

Plants are the source of food for animals, and when there are too many animals for the plants to feed them, they become hungry. Plants are animals’ bodies without which they cannot survive. Most of their diets come from plants or trees. Examples of plant-eating animals are deer, squirrels, rabbits, and hyenas.

All animals have certain characteristics which are necessary for them to live in their natural habitat. It is a very interesting animal fact that each animal has its own unique personality and characteristics. For example, fish is an excellent swimmer, while some amphibians are excellent at climbing. Some animals are cold blooded, while other animals are warm blooded. The most interesting animal facts are those that show how these animals can survive in their natural environment.
